Madeleine Bialke's paintings respond to our changing environment and reflect on her interest in nature and society. Based loosely on real landscapes she encounters, she enhances shapes and color to convey emotion. The flora depicted often take on expressive anthropomorphic qualities. She has shown work internationally with solo exhibitions in Antwerp, Belgium, London, UK and Seoul, SK and nationally in New York City, Los Angeles and Denver. Her work is included in many public collections, namely X Museum, Beijing and Zuzeum, Latvia. As the Nemeth's summer resident, she will be creating and premiering a new body of work. Bialke holds an MFA from Boston University and a BFA from Plattsburgh State University of New York. She lives and works in London.
A native to the landscape he explores, Gudmundson's photographs reflect an ongoing survey of the Midwest that expresses the sense of a particular place and of a particular vision. Over the years he's spent the majority of his time in the wonderful openness of North Dakota and of late in northern Minnesota on the White Earth Reservation. He's also explored the stark landscape of Iceland where his ancestors lived, the Sonoran desert where he spends his winters and the Burgundy region of France where his daughter lives. His work is in the permanent collection of many major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Reykjavik Museum of Photography, the Canadian Center of Architecture in Montreal and the Plains Art Museum in Fargo.

The Federales will get you dancing at 2nd Street Stage Thursday, July 18 in Downtown Park Rapids. Social hour starts at 5 p.m. The free concert begins at 6. Remember to bring your own chair. The Federales are not from the Black Hills, the Texas Panhandle or Appalachia. They're from the Twin Cities. Damn proud of it, too, but they play country music, because it’s one of America's native languages. "We use it to tell our stories of love, good times, Grain Belt and friends. Some are fact. Some are fiction with the truth hiding in there somewhere. All of them are heartfelt. We're pickers, fiddlers, groovers and harmonizers. We’re ready to make you sing along, get up and dance or just sit and tap your toes." "Heartbroken lyrics sound like they'd fit right in at a summertime backyard party." - The Current. The Federales are James Gould, electric guitar; Mark Larson, drums; Ben Miller, acoustic guitar, harmonica, vocals; Jay Scabich, fiddle; Andy Schuster, bass; Karl Wahoske, banjo, acoustic guitar, vocals.

2nd Street Stage: Jillian Rae
Head to Downtown Park Rapids Thursday, July 25, to enjoy the Jillian Rae Band at 2nd Street Stage. Social hour starts at 5 p.m. The free concert begins at 6. Remember to bring your own chair. Jillian Rae is a fiercely unique spirit - a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who cares more about making authentic music than about fitting into a tidy box. Raised on Minnesota's Iron Range, Rae grew up playing in orchestras but fell in love early on with the traditional Scandinavian music she learned from her Finnish violin teacher. Equally influenced by her parents' Jimi Hendrix record collection and polka music inherited from her grandparents, she quickly learned how to adapt a variety of music to the instrument - putting her own spin on rock, folk and classical music. Unsurprisingly, she studied music in college, then relocated to Minneapolis and formed her own band. She has become a commanding international presence, heading up her own critically acclaimed rock/pop band and creating powerful, genre-bending songs. She also performs regularly with her traditional folk band, Corpse Reviver, and has toured extensively, backing up Grammy-winning acts like The Okee Dokee Brothers. Band members are Jillian Rae, lead vocals, violin, guitar, keys; Eric Martin, guitar, backing vocals; Jimmy Osterholt, bass; and Christian Wheeler, drums, backing vocals.

Nemeth Art Center Exhibits: Madeleine Bialke and Wayne Gudmondson
Hours this season are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

In 2018, Milwaukee native Victor Span added his talents on drums and Jeremy Johnson added his guitar skills to bring the band where they are today!
